Calculation Methodology & Rules

The Health Insurance Cover Calculator uses an advisory heuristic model to recommend an optimal health insurance sum insured size for your household. Read our detailed guide: How Much Health Insurance Cover Is Enough? or check rules in The Complete Insurance Guide.

How the Recommendation is Derived

  • Base Floater Cover: Metro floaters start at ₹10 Lakhs (non-metro at ₹7 Lakhs) for a family, adding ₹1 Lakh for each dependent beyond 2 members.
  • Age Factor: Health risks rise with age. Recommendations are boosted by 30% for ages 45-60, and 60% for ages above 60.
  • Income Factor: As a guideline for lifestyle and hospital selection, we recommend keeping health cover at least equal to 50% of your annual income.

Frequently Asked Questions

Healthcare costs are rising rapidly in India. For metro cities, a minimum base cover of ₹10 Lakhs is recommended for a family. For non-metros, ₹5-7 Lakhs is a reasonable start. You should increase this based on the age of family members and overall income.

A family floater policy covers multiple members of a family under a single sum insured pool. Any member covered under the policy can claim up to the total sum insured limit during the policy year. It is generally more affordable than buying individual policies for each member.

Treatment and hospitalization costs are significantly higher in Tier 1 / metro cities (like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore) compared to non-metro areas. Therefore, people living in metros require a larger cover size to get adequate cashless treatment at premium corporate hospitals.
